In short, an empowerment is a blessing imparted to an individual
(or group)  and comprised of 4 parts:
for the body (physical obscurations),
speech (obscurations caused by our words),
mind (purifying our mental obscurations) and
the fourth part which is simply referred to as “the fourth part”
(purifying the subtle obscurations to enlightenment).
This fourth part is not always conveyed in words and instead an object is sometimes displayed that illustrates the clarity and luminosity of mind.

Though on the whole there is only one Buddha, there are many aspects of Buddha called deities, which represent aspects of each individual's innate Buddha Nature. During an empowerment, the aspect of the Buddha invoked elicits specific qualities that are then conveyed to the participant in the form of a blessing, along with it’s attribute (power). During an empowerment, participants can begin to develop the qualities of that aspect in themselves
– such as compassion.

One can look upon an empowerment as an opportunity to come into contact with one’s own Buddha nature and receive continued benefit by repeated participation, facilitating one’s own spiritual growth.
To those who already have an established practice, an empowerment can serve as a sort of ‘enhancement,” while to others, it can serve as a foundation for a practice – both equally important.

As a traditional aspect of some of the empowerments, you have the option of receiving 5 small non-toxic tablets that have been the focused object of millions of directed prayers and blessings.
To insure maximum comfort during the empowerment,
please wear loose fitting clothing
and bring a cushion or blanket to sit on.
An empowerment lasts around an hour and a half.

After an empowerment is finished, it is customary to offer a white scarf (khatag) to the presiding Lama, but not strictly necessary.
If a khatag is offered, it will usually be returned to you as a blessing.
This custom is not obligatory, as a simple smile
and bow will also suffice. Khatags will most likely
be available for purchase for a few dollars
before/after the ritual empowerment begins.

If you wish to make a financial offering to the Lama out of recognition for his generosity, you can bring an envelope
in which you can place your offering.
Optionally, it is also common to do the same for the translator in appreciation of his efforts (bring a second envelope).
These offerings are presented at the end of the empowerment and can be placed on the Lama’s table.
Money is not unsuitable as an offering
and due to the nature of the Monk’s mission, it is very appropriate.
Each person, if able, should offer what he or she can.
We are asking for a $20 donation, but if you cannot afford this,
any amount will be perfectly fine.
